Monte ColemanResident Evangelist
Monte Coleman is a consummate athletic competitor! He has "heart," motivation, and ability! Though he played junior high football, his high school career consisted of only one game during his senior year. Despite his lack of high school experience, his love for the game of football motivated him to walk on at the University of Central Arkansas, where his brother was already playing for the Bears. In 1979 Monte actually became the first player in the history of UCA to be drafted by the National Football League (NFL).
Monte played sixteen years for the Washington Redskins (second only to Darrell Green in the number of years played and games played). His career included four Super Bowls, with the Redskins winning three of those championships.
His impressive, personal honors have included him in the UCA Hall of Fame and the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame, earned him the UCA Distinguished Alumnus Award (1999), placed him on the All-Madden Team, designated him as one of the Sports Illustrated Top 50 Athletes in Arkansas and one of the 70 Greatest Players in Washington Redskins' History, etc. Even though he rose to the pinnacle of success as a linebacker for the Washington Redskins, Monte never forgot that the "win" that really counts is in the game of life.
Knowing that his accomplishments and his influence should all be used to honor God, impact his world with the Gospel, and make this world a better place, Monte is committed to walk through the doors of ministry that open to him. Though still very active in the game of football, as head coach of the Golden Lions of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, he realizes that his call is not only to teach football skills but also to train young people to win the game of life.
Monte has always given back to the community and modeled a compassionate heart for people. He has previously served as Honorary Chairperson for the Make-a-Wish foundation and the United Way and also served on the Board of the Boys' and Girls' Clubs (Washington, DC).He previously served as the Pine Bluff Cities of Character Chairperson.
Monte travels extensively, speaking in numerous venues. He is also involved in the ministry of this church, supportive of Senior Pastor Gary Bell, and dedicated to use his influence and abilities in both evangelism and discipleship. When he is not traveling, he resides in Pine Bluff with his wife, Yvette. They have three children (Jasmine, Kyndall, and Kyle).
